College recommendation

Hi everyone,

My daughter is a senior in high school and she wants to study graphic design in college. She went to the summer program at Academy of Art University in SF this summer and loved it. The program seems to be excellent and profession driven which is good. But I am concerned about her having a more diverse college experience and the tuition is quite high. Do any of you know of highly rated graphic design majors at colleges in California or Oregon?

Your help is greatly appreciated!!
Advice regarding work for hire?

Hey all,

I have a situation... My wife paid another performing artist to create a website for her, which in their arrangements included hosting.
For my understanding this is a work for hire, since he would not have made this website otherwise, without her payment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_for_hire

Now that the registry of her URL is coming up, he does not want to send us the files for the site so we can reload it onto the hosting plan that I have for my websites. He claims it is not their policy to release files. We like the base design, while the mystery meat navigation is slow and buggy, the base of the design is nice. We offered to keep his design credits unless a complete overhaul occurs, since we like the visual layout. For my knowledge, my wife paid for:
1. graphic design of the site
2. hosting from web release until this summer, seperately from basic design cost
3. registry of her URL, which was put in her name under his business.

What to do?
Do we keep the base design and re-script the back-end if he chooses to not send the files of the complete site?
What exactly are you buying when you contract for a site to be built, if not the files that comprise the site?
Recommendations?

Many thanks,
MT

Hello!

I am looking for information on the basic methods of transferring vector or pixel based graphics to various fabrics. I can't seem to get a clear break-down via surfing the net and I don't know of any books on the subject.

SOOOOO if anyone knows or can point me towards a book/ site, etc. I would be most thankful!

Truly,

It cost £14,000 to create, but clearly no-one at the smart London design outfit that came up with the new logo for HM Treasury thought to turn it on its side.

Kind of reminds me of the fiasco that occurred when thousands of pencils were produced for schools that said DON'T DO DRUGS.

The problem was that when the students sharpened their pencils.. the pencils ended up saying DO DRUGS.

Hi…I’m new here…hoping to make some friends. My primary interests are art, new media and environmental stewardship. I’m looking to connect with Digital Artists, to include them in an international touring art exhibition called Common Ground www.commonground2008.com. The theme for each piece in the collection will be about the Environment. We launch our exhibition in Beijing to coincide with the Olympics in 2008, then on to cities in Europe and the Americas in 2009 and 2010. Would love to hear from you and support you any way that I can. Please join my community of friends and our tribe, Common Ground 2008. Peace.

I'm conducting a survey to hear what women working in web design and development have to say.

If you're a woman working as a web designer or developer, please take a minute to take this short survey at http://www.repeatpenguin.com/

What advise can anyone give me for the best process to make photos like the ones found inside the letters? I tried all kinds of different ways, but it's just not looking right. This postcard is also a little vintage. Anyone have any suggestions what I could do through Photshop?
Thanks in advance!

One part that rang so loudly was this:

"We can think cobbling together bits and pieces of other legitimately original works makes us creative all we want, but it’s a delusional concept. Not only is it demotivating to truly creative people, it sends a terrible message. That your original idea is my original idea and as such I have a right to do anything I want with it. Fact: It’s creative people who make the world a better place, not creative leeches."
Charging Late Fees to Delinquent Clients

Can someone show me a link/data proving that it is indeed legal to charge late fees to clients who are late or refusing to pay their invoices?

I have noted on all my invoices that a 15% late feel will be asessed every 30 days a payment is delinquent. My client is telling me "The court will not allow you to assess arbitrarily rediculous late fees." I need some hard evidence one way or the other.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks much,
What is up with everyone from the dentist to the business man to the lawyer - people with NO visual articulation whatsoever - all thinking they are suddenly masters when it comes to visual design?

I've been getting gigs lately where people think that I'm just a photoshop extension of their own hands. I wouldn't mind so much if they added something, or had interesting things to contribute. But they do not.

I'm going to refuse those jobs from now on.

Has anyone here run into problems opening pdf files on the Web that were created using Illustrator CS2? I ran into a small problem when trying to open PDFs from a Web site where it would open the files in a new window (Acrobat 7 Pro), show the image of the document, then in less than a second, the window would close on it's own. I did all the usual troubleshooting (rebooting, opening PDFs from other sites, etc.).

I'm baffled.

Question: Illustrator text silliness

Greetings--

Somehow text boxes in Illustrator are acting up (CS & CS2). The cursor
can be located between characters, but:

1. Using the text tool, the line cursor appears between two characters, but glyphs and words cannot be selected, therefore not changed individually in size, color, type face, etc. Characters can be deleted and new ones inserted, however.

2. Using the pointer tool, text in the box can be changed: face, size, color using text palette and/or menu.

Am I missing something? This behavior keeps driving me back to Freehand to get things done!

Regards,

I've been using Suitcase ever since I upgraded to OS X years ago and they discontinued ATM Deluxe. Since then, I've found Suitcase to be profoundly unstable. (I tried Font Book, but that was truly pathetic.) I'm thinking of switching to Font Reserve.

Anyone have any opinion of the pros and cons of one over the other?

I am a visual artist that has been doing fine art and some illustration but I am interested in a career in graphic art. I would like to know if I what courses and skills I would need to work, if I would need a completed degree or if there are specific individual programs that I would need to know. I know this is a pretty basic question but I thought I would go to the experts to ask.

Freelancer seeking self-marketing/resume advice

Hi all,

After a couple of full-time design jobs, I've been freelancing for the last 2 years, mostly under my fictitious business name (sole-proprietor). As life sometimes happens, I'm in need of more income and have not been able to pull in more clients. I have one part-time contract job I'd like to keep and would like to find a second part-time job. So far everything has come to me by word-of-mouth, so I haven't had to really market myself before.

So my question is, what now? Do I set up my resume to reflect my freelance business, list my major contracts, and have a section near the bottom describing my previous full time jobs? Or do I list ALL the contracts I've had over the last two years? Or should I only have my resume reflect me as a person and leave my business name out of it? Or do something completely different than a resume?

Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts.
Jennifer

Hello. (whew!)

Before dropping out of design school, I asked for job advice, and the answer was: network!

WTF is that!? I asked, and was given an explanation that I did not understand (something about eating dinner and having drinks, or some such). Can anyone in the field tell me how to get a freelance gig that does not pay in beer and tickets to the band's show? Where do I start? Before that, how does my work look? (I've just posted 'text delivery').

Any help appreciated ;)

technical assistance for outdoor signage

hi, all I am new :)

I need to find some technical advice on creating a new outdoor sign This is the second one I've done for this business, and the first sign was successful but quite straightforward, a 4' by 8' double sided panel to place in an existing frame. Now they are asking for a sign approximately 3' by 12' also double sided, but not flat, ie. the panels will run at 45 degrees to one another. Has anyone done something like this? I'm concerned about the actual physical construction of the sign, making sure it's good and strong and *stable* enough. There are no local codes governing signage. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

www.thehurricaneposterproject.com

Moxie Sozo, a nationally known design firm in Boulder, Colorado is teaming
up with other designers and design firms around the country to create THE HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT. Posters are being donated every day and submissions will be accepted until the end of the year.

All poster designers please step up!

THE HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT seeks limited edition sets of hurricane-related posters from high-profile and up-and-coming artists, designers, and design firms from around the United States and abroad. The donated posters will be sold online, and all proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross.

As designers, we have the collective ability to do what we love, AND to
create a difference. THE HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT has been conceived as a collective effort by the design community to unite and effect change through our work. In order for this project to be successful, we are counting on designer participation. Our goal is to raise at least $1,000,000 for the Red Cross through this project. Please spread the word. Please participate. We continue to receive new posters almost every day, and will continue to accept submissions until December 31, 2005.

New Voices Call for Submissions now live!

Hey Guys,

We just published the 2006 Telefilm New Voices Call for Submissions at our website - its a PDF you can download from http://www.dx.org/digifest .

I'm not sure if all of you are interested in particular modified designs you might want to submit but thought you'd find this interesting anyway :)

Here's some info:

--

digifest has gone mod! The ‘mod’ theme - short for modern in the ‘60s - and currently used to mean modification - reveals inspiring and surprising innovations in digital design, art and cultural expression.

We invite you to participate in digifest 2006: mods, an interdisciplinary festival of the best in innovative new media, art and design from Canada and abroad. This year participants will have the opportunity to express the individual’s role within larger systems, be they political, social or corporate, through their own unique and personalized modifications to off-the-shelf products. Modification possibilities may range from personal computers to clothing; from podcasts to public space; from video games and cell phones to cars or dwellings. The do-it-yourself aspect of this year’s digifest means that the range of modifications is endless, with creativity leading the way in unconventional expression.

Each year 8-12 winners of the juried digifest New Voices call are invited to Toronto, Canada to showcase their work at one of digifest’s high-profile venues, which include Harbourfront Centre, Ontario Science Centre and Design Exchange. In 2006 we will showcase the most innovative transitions in product design from “modern” to “modification.” Work by selected presenters will be installed or displayed. Get your submission in today!
Favorite Font/Foundry

i just got a new fontfont catalog, so i've been going a little crazy with it the last few days. and i've been thinking that i've been using Scala and Scala Sans pretty much exclusively for about three years now and that it's time to retire, especially since i've started to see it -- abused, of course -- in direct mail coupons and the like...

so, i really need another cool sans serif to play with. preferably comparable to Scala -- a full family set at least. i know The Sans is pretty popular right now, but i don't really care for it... too heavy.

my other current faves --

serif fonts:
Paperback (house)
Mrs. Eaves (emigre)
Clifford (fontfont)

display/script fonts:
dalliance (emigre)

i'm also digging Arnhem by Our Type, Zanzibar by Fountain, and FindReplace by Process Type Foundry, but that's only after viewing them on screen; i'm reserving judgement until i see them used...

so, what are your favorites?

I have been finding tons of old wood on the curbs driving around as the snow melts.
I want to paint all sorts of old type signs for our shop but slightly off - Like Meat Market with splatters of red paint and Antique reproductions that would make someone take a moment and think.
I will really have to practice my cold lettering as I do not have the room for the overhead in our tiny house (and that would be cheating the Folksy spirit wouldn't it?) For somereason people are throwing away books around here too in masses.
Just wanted to inspire you to stop and check the wood piles and old metal signs....sometimes we can get up to $2-300.00 dollars for "authentic reproductions" of signs that never were.

Design a tribe.net user profile template.

If you're a CSS-savvy designer and a tribe fan, you might be interested in this little contest we're running -- we're debuting a new feature soon: customizable user profiles. Users will be able to select from a library of styles, featuring custom graphics and fonts.

We're looking to include user-created styles, and feature them on the style library page. To that end, we've running a contest: submit your style concept as a JPEG to profiledesign@tribe.net by April 1st, and we'll select the best ones to feature in the style library. If selected, your style will be credited with your name, which will be linked to your user profile.

This is a great opportunity to get your name and skills out -- every tribe.net user will see the style library page. If you'd like to enter a concept, check the Profile Design Contest tribe:

http://profiledesign.tribe.net/

I'll be posting sample designs there, and answering questions about how to design a template.

You can also get more information at the listing I posted about the contest:

Henry Wolf, Graphic Designer

HENRY WOLF, GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Led U.S. Magazine Design In '50s, '60s

By Steven Heller
New York Times

NEW YORK - Henry Wolf, the graphic designer and photographer who, as art director of Esquire, Harper's Bazaar and Show magazines in the 1950s and '60s, held sway over American periodical design, died Feb. 14 at his apartment in Manhattan. He was 79.

He was found dead by his assistant, though the cause of death has not yet been determined, said a friend, the designer Ivan Chermayeff.

Few magazine art directors at the time wielded more creative control than Wolf, who was known for his bold yet simple use of expressive typography, surreal photography and conceptual illustration. Rather than accept the typical role of an acquiescent layout artist, he closely collaborated with editors to define their magazines' personalities. He selected typefaces, commissioned pictorial features from well-known or newly discovered photographers and illustrators and decided what to feature on covers.

``Henry had an intuitive but acute intelligence,'' said his former assistant at Esquire, film director Robert Benton. ``You could see the thought in his layouts. Anything that didn't have meaning was cut out.''

Wolf was often outspoken on the state of magazines in general, and quick to note that good content was neutralized when editorial material and design were not in sync. ``An enlightened despot would be a big help in publishing,'' he said in a speech titled ``What's Wrong With Magazines,'' published in Print magazine in 1965. He insisted, ``A magazine should not only reflect a trend; it should help start it.''

Wolf joined the advertising agency McCann Erikson's Center for Advanced Practice in 1965 and later became creative director of Trahey/Wolf Advertising. By 1971, after determining that there were no more magazines for him to design, Wolf devoted himself to advertising and editorial photography and opened Henry Wolf Productions. He photographed elegant fashion layouts and still lifes for clients like Saks Fifth Avenue and I. Magnin, as well as advertisements for Xerox, IBM, Revlon and DeBeers.

Wolf taught magazine design and photography at the School of Visual Arts, Cooper Union and the Parsons School of Design. He received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1976 and was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 1980.

In 1951 he became an art director for the U.S. State Department, designing publications and posters for overseas use. The next year he took a job in Esquire's promotion art department as a junior art director.

Five months later, in a move that surprised his peers and himself, he was promoted to Esquire's graphics editor. At 26, he was one of the youngest design stewards at any national magazine. Wolf took two years to refashion the magazine into exactly what he wanted.

In 1958 Wolf succeeded Alexey Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar. In 1961 he became art director of a progressive new arts magazine, Show, where his covers were noteworthy for their pictorial wit and elegance.

freelance rates

hi. I am curious what you people think about freelance rates.... I know it depends on how corporate the potential client, length of commitment, etc...

It's been ages since I had to give number for this kind of thing. I have ten years experience, print, web, 4c publishing, corporate collateral, interactive advertising (ack). I did quite a lot of freelancing during the late '90s tech boom, and was charging close to lawyer rates for some of, but since about 2000 all the work I have done has been for nonprofits and the alternative press, which obviously pays much lower.

is $40./hr. a lot? $50.? 2004 was kind of depressing, as I made less in a year of consistently working than I did my first year doing such (1994).

It does seem that design work is picking up, though. I've had two people in the past week contact me after seeing my coroflot portfolio, these are the first two ever, and the portfolio has been up for three years.

is there hope?

any advice?

seems like music packaging in general has improved since digital music downloading emerged... creating desire for the object that contains the music is imperative, perhaps...

Gotta get some concepts done and dusted for a pitch....when I say clip art I don't mean all the cheesy crap you see about, I'm after some silohette type vector images of cars....people...buildings etc etc

Gonna and adapt some real simple silohette clip art into some funky 2 colour sh*t! So any help would be much appreciated people!! All I seem to find is really amateur lookin dodgy clip art...

Thanks in advance people!!

It Is Beautiful...Then Gone

Author: Martin Venezky
ISBN: 1568984561
Publisher: Princeton Architectural Press

Synopsis:

Martin Venezky is not your typical point-and-click designer. While he is adept at operating a mouse, he is just as comfortable cutting and pasting type from old books or collaging found signs or making his own photographs. What results arethe unique creations of a unique eye. And with this eye and his design firm, Appetite Engineers, Venezky has created beautiful and influential work for Speak and Open magazines, the Sundance Film Festival, Reebok, and numerous publishersand institutions. It Is Beautiful...Then Gone presents Venzky's commercial design work as well as new graphic work created for the book; details of the wall collage that define his office and his aesthetic; the singular photography, collections, and notebooks that define his personality; and text that explains -- or at least questions -- it all. Venezky's philosophy that life and design are a continuation of each other permeates this elegant book filled with hundredsof idiosyncratic, deeply wrought examples.

Author Biography: Martin Venezky is the director of Appetite Engineers, a design company whose clients include the Sundance Film Festival, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, andBlue Note records. He lives in Rhode Island.

Career question…

I've been a production manager for a weekly newspaper for the past five years. I have also been a freelance graphic designer for the past nine years. I am currently in the process of making a career shift, where I will be going back to school this coming January at Parsons School of Design (NYC) for an accelerated degree in graphic design.

At the same time, I am planning on leaving my current job, and would like to find a position as a highly-experienced production artist, as I have 17 years under my belt, both traditionally and digitally. I've been a manager for over five years and have no interest in managing any longer. All I want to do is get the work, do it, and go home at the end of the day…end of story. I plan to hold this position while attending school, then move on to a design position upon graduating.

My question to you all is the following: What would be the most important thing to present to a prospective employer…my resume with all my experience, skills and accomplishments listed, or a portfolio containing all my production work? In your opinion, which of these would hold more weight?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be most welcome. Thanks in advance!

i am interested in getting more involved with graphic design in my next job. currently i do catch-all admin for a small nonj-profit (read: screwing in lightbulbs, web design, photocopying, newsletter, etc.). the times i enjoy myself at work are when i'm doing design projects. so here comes my question: what does it take to be a designer? Do you need an art degree (mine is in mideval studies)? how did you get into this field? what is it like to work in? do you enjoy it? thanks for reading.

Hi, I am new to the tribe, and am looking for a site on the web that has information on old graphic design techniques, especially the old line art camera (screen companica 6500 to be exact.) I have searched high and low, so my hopes are not up, sigh.

if you had to decide between a job where your comfortable and have full creative control, but had to do safe, less daring work, or a job at a big company where your working with more people and wouldn't really have a one on one relationship with the higher ups, but got to do more crazy, fun design, which would you choose?

Mine would be the NYC sticker project..I forget the designer's name, but he stuck speech balloon stickers on posters and ads all over nyc, then came back to photograph the comments people had written in them. They are really cool. It was a nice way to make the voice of the street heard.
